Version 1.28.1 Released

Version 1.28.1 is now available.

After the introduction of the new four-channel audio system in 1.28.0, this update goes much further.

The first version established the technical foundation.

Version 1.28.1 focuses on the music itself.

More tracks. More variation. More identity between regions, systems and combat situations.

And one very important rule:

No track in this update is simply another track played faster or slower.

43 Original Chiptune Tracks

The soundtrack has been expanded from 13 tracks to 43.

Each track now has its own musical structure based on:

  • key
  • mode
  • chord progression
  • lead melody
  • counter-melody
  • bassline
  • percussion pattern
  • rhythmic form

The result is a much broader soundtrack where different areas of Knights of Crystalis can develop their own musical identity.

Longer Musical Forms

The first version of the new soundtrack mainly used compact four-bar structures.

Version 1.28.1 expands the new compositions to eight-bar forms.

This gives melodies more room to develop and makes loops feel less repetitive during longer sessions.

The music can now establish an idea, answer it, and move through a more complete phrase before looping.

Real Second Voices

Pulse Channel 2 has also been substantially reworked.

Previously, the secondary pulse voice relied heavily on generated chord movement and arpeggio-style accompaniment.

The new soundtrack uses composed counter-melodies and rhythmic figures.

That means Pulse 2 now behaves more like an actual second musical voice rather than simply filling harmony underneath the lead.

The four-channel structure is now used as:

  • Pulse 1 — primary melody
  • Pulse 2 — counter-melody and rhythmic harmony
  • Wave — composed bass movement
  • Noise — percussion and texture

Eight Regional Exploration Themes

Every major regional element now has its own exploration music.

Fire

Emberfall Horizon

Ice

Moon over Frostglass

Storm

Rainveil Signals

Earth

Greenglass Footsteps

Light

Pilgrim Lanterns

Shadow

Veil Without Stars

Arcane

Meridian Echoes

Physical

Old King's Road

Exploration music can therefore reflect the identity of the region rather than relying on one general World theme.

Eight Regional Battle Themes

The same eight regional categories now also have their own battle compositions.

A fight in a Storm-aligned region can therefore sound different from a Fire, Shadow or Arcane encounter.

These are separate compositions rather than accelerated versions of the exploration themes.

This gives regional identity a stronger presence both outside and inside combat.

More Boss Music

Boss encounters have also been divided into more specific musical categories.

Dedicated music now exists for:

  • Campaign and general bosses
  • Rift and Nexus bosses
  • Legendary Guild Bounties
  • Secret World and Dungeon bosses
  • Seasonal bosses
  • Raid encounters
  • Hall of Legends

Boss fights should now feel more connected to the system they belong to instead of sharing one universal high-intensity track.

More System Themes

Many non-combat systems now have their own dedicated music as well.

This includes areas such as:

  • Crownstead
  • Forge
  • Market
  • Village
  • Farm
  • Mine
  • Deepfolk
  • Aquarium
  • Adventurer's Guild
  • Casino
  • Arcade
  • Menagerie
  • Forgotten Roads
  • News
  • Chat
  • Story / Chronicle

The intention is not to make every menu loud or dramatic.

It is to give different parts of the game recognizable musical character.

Better Combat Routing

The music-routing system has also been refined.

Special activities now retain their own identity during combat.

For example:

  • Arena battles continue using Arena music
  • Abyss Tower battles retain Tower music
  • Labyrinth encounters retain Labyrinth music
  • Rift and Nexus bosses use dedicated Rift boss music
  • Secret Dungeon bosses use dedicated Secret boss music
  • Legendary Bounties use Guild-specific boss music

This ensures the larger soundtrack is actually heard through normal gameplay rather than existing only inside the music database.

No Tempo-Only Variants

One of the most important technical additions in this patch is a new soundtrack regression test.

Track uniqueness is no longer determined by title or BPM.

The test intentionally ignores tempo.

Instead, it compares musical structure including:

  • tonal center
  • mode
  • harmony
  • lead line
  • secondary voice
  • bassline

If two future tracks are musically identical and differ only because one is faster or slower, the audio self-test will fail.

Current soundtrack validation:

43 tracks

43 unique musical score signatures

0 tempo-only duplicates

This rule is now part of the release QA pipeline.

Live Adaptive Switching

The adaptive music system introduced in 1.28.0 remains in place.

Version 1.28.1 expands the amount of context it can react to.

During Chromium runtime testing, the game correctly started:

Rainveil Signals

for a Storm-region World state and then switched live to:

Wound in the Sky

during a Rift boss encounter.

The Web Audio context remained active during the transition and the four-channel sequencer continued running normally.

Sound Effects Remain Independent

The expanded soundtrack does not change the separation between music and sound effects.

Players can still independently control:

  • Music volume
  • SFX volume

The chip-style combat, UI, reward and interaction sounds introduced in the previous audio update remain supported.
