Version 1.28.0 Released
Version 1.28.0 is here.
This update focuses on something that has been missing from Knights of Crystalis for far too long:
a proper musical identity.
The previous audio system worked only inconsistently across browser sessions and did not yet give KoC the kind of atmosphere a large fantasy RPG deserves.
Version 1.28.0 replaces that foundation with a new adaptive 4-channel chiptune soundtrack, expands the game’s sound effects, and fixes the browser-audio lifecycle issues that could make music appear unreliable after reloads.
Welcome to Four Voices of Crystalis.
A New 4-Channel Soundtrack
The new soundtrack is generated directly through the browser using Web Audio.
Instead of relying on large external music files, Knights of Crystalis now uses a dedicated four-channel sequencer inspired by classic handheld and early 8-bit RPG hardware.
The four channels are:
- Pulse 1 — lead melody
- Pulse 2 — harmony and rhythmic support
- Wave — basslines, arpeggios and low-end movement
- Noise — percussion and impact textures
Together, these channels form the new musical foundation of KoC.
The goal is a distinctly retro fantasy sound: melodic, adventurous, heroic and occasionally melancholic.
All music in this update is original.
13 Adaptive Tracks
Version 1.28.0 introduces 13 context-sensitive tracks.
The soundtrack now reacts to where you are and what you are doing.
Current music includes themes such as:
- Crystal Overture
- Pale Roads, Silver Stars
- Roads Beneath the Map
- Lanterns of Crownstead
- Greenstead Morning
- Stone Keeps the Name
- Beastbound Heartbeat
- Blades in the Prism
- Fracture March
- Crown Against the Void
- Five Bells of the Hall
Different parts of the game can now have their own musical identity.
This includes areas and activities such as:
- Home
- World exploration
- Forgotten Roads
- Crownstead
- Farm
- Menagerie
- normal combat
- boss battles
- Arena
- Rift content
- Hall of Legends
The soundtrack can switch dynamically as the player moves between systems.
Music Persistence Fixed
The previous music system had an important lifecycle issue.
Even when the player had music enabled, the runtime could reset the active playback state after a reload.
At the same time, modern browsers require Web Audio to be unlocked by a real user interaction before sound can begin.
Together, those behaviors made music feel inconsistent.
Version 1.28.0 fixes that flow.
Now:
- Music preference is preserved.
- The game reloads normally.
- The first real tap, click or keypress unlocks Web Audio.
- Music resumes automatically.
Players no longer need to repeatedly re-enable the soundtrack after normal browser reloads.
Adaptive Music Switching
The new sequencer can also switch music while the game is running.
For example, during testing:
Home
correctly played:
Crystal Overture
and entering Forgotten Roads switched to:
Roads Beneath the Map
without restarting the game or rebuilding the audio system.
This provides a much stronger sense of place across KoC’s growing number of systems.
Expanded Sound Effects
Music was not the only focus of this update.
The game’s chip-style sound effect library has also been expanded.
New or improved sound cues now cover events such as:
- UI navigation
- button interactions
- combat hits
- Critical Hits
- healing
- buffs
- rewards
- achievements
- crafting
- warnings
- Aquarium hatching
- chat activity
- Farm collection
- News notifications
The intention is to make important actions readable through sound without overwhelming the player.
Separate Music and SFX Volume
Music and sound effects remain independently adjustable.
Players can therefore:
- disable music while keeping SFX
- disable SFX while keeping music
- lower music independently
- lower interface/combat sounds independently
The new audio system does not force a single global volume preference.
Browser-Friendly by Design
The new soundtrack is generated procedurally through Web Audio.
This has several advantages for the itch.io build:
- no large music downloads
- no external audio hosting
- no dependency on streaming
- fast loading
- seamless looping
- small release footprint
- full offline compatibility
It also makes adaptive music easier because the game can directly control individual channels and sequencing behavior.
Forgotten Roads Packaging Fix
While integrating the new audio system, a separate packaging issue from version 1.27.0 was discovered.
forgotten_roads.js existed inside the release archive, but the main index.html did not actually load it.
The startup page also still referenced an older cache revision.
That combination could lead to inconsistent behavior depending on what the browser already had cached.
Version 1.28.0 corrects this.
Forgotten Roads is now explicitly loaded by the production startup path.
