Version 2.2.0 Released
Version 2.2.0 is here!
This update marks the end of the current major presentation overhaul and turns Knights of Crystalis into a much more connected, polished and immersive experience.
Over the last several releases, the game received major improvements to combat presentation, monsters, regions, UI, animations, Hero Art, environmental effects and audio. Version 2.2.0 brings those systems together by focusing on one major goal:
Make the game feel more like one connected fantasy world and less like a collection of separate menus.
A More Connected World
Home, World, Story, Journal, Crownstead, the Tavern and Village are now tied together through the new Connected World Hub presentation.
Instead of constantly jumping between unrelated screens, the game now gives you much more context about where you are and what you are currently working toward.
A new Journey Ribbon can show:
- Your current location
- Your current story thread
- Your next campaign objective
- Relevant destinations
- Context-sensitive actions
The existing progression rules are still fully respected. The new navigation does not allow locked regions or campaign progression to be bypassed.
Living Legends Feel More Present
Existing NPCs and Living Legends now have a stronger presence throughout the main hub experience.
Their existing roles, relationships and affinity values are used to surface characters that are currently relevant to your journey.
No separate relationship system was added. This update instead makes much better use of systems that were already part of the game.
Better Story and Quest Presentation
Story, Journal and World progression are now more closely connected.
The result is a clearer sense of:
- What happened previously
- What your party is currently doing
- Which objective comes next
- Where that objective takes place
- How the current chapter fits into the wider campaign
This becomes particularly useful now that the campaign contains 17 chapters, 148 regions and more than 1,100 campaign objectives.
Town Hub Improvements
Crownstead, the Tavern and Village now feel more like places belonging to the same world rather than completely isolated utility screens.
The underlying systems remain intact, but presentation and navigation have been brought much closer together.
Mobile Improvements
The Connected World system was designed with mobile play in mind.
Improvements include:
- Larger touch targets
- More compact hub layouts
- Responsive NPC presentation
- Mobile-friendly Journey Ribbon
- Reduced unnecessary navigation
- Better use of limited screen space
- Reduced-motion support
Final Release Optimization
After completing the feature work, 2.2.0 received a dedicated release-hardening pass.
One important cache issue was discovered during this process: several runtime files were already using a newer cache identifier while index.html was still requesting the previous one.
This could potentially cause browsers or itch.io to mix old cached bundles with newer game files after an update.
That issue has now been corrected.
The final release uses:
Cache build: 2.2.0.522
Smaller Release Package
The itch.io package was also cleaned up.
Many JavaScript source modules were being shipped twice:
- As individual source files
- And already compiled inside the production bundles
Those redundant copies have now been removed from the production package.
Before
- Around 350 files
- Around 7.47 MB ZIP
Final 2.2.0 Release
- 109 files
- Around 6.19 MB ZIP
All actual runtime dependencies, lazy-loaded modules, Arcade content and required assets remain included.
Save Compatibility
No reset is required.
- Save Schema remains 39
- Existing saves remain supported
- All 40 UI routes remain available
- No progression systems were removed
- No economy reset
- No inventory reset
- No character reset
What Was NOT Rebalanced
2.2.0 is primarily a presentation and release-quality update.
It does not intentionally rebalance:
- Damage
- Healing
- Combat AI
- Autobattle
- Loot chances
- Gold economy
- Maps
- Legendary Hunts
- Endgame Mastery
- Starfall progression
- Endless progression
The goal was to improve presentation and stability without destabilizing the existing game.
Release Validation
The final build passed the automated release pipeline, including:
- JavaScript syntax validation
- Save compatibility
- Balance checks
- World Hub tests
- Release Candidate checks
- Full Quality checks
- Full Balance checks
- Bundle loading
- Runtime dependency validation
- Asset validation
- Duplicate-ID checks
- ZIP integrity testing
The complete pre-packaging source passed 145/145 JavaScript syntax checks.
The optimized production package reports:
- 0 missing runtime dependencies
- 0 duplicate static HTML IDs
- 0 ZIP errors
The Visual Evolution So Far
The path to 2.2.0 has been extensive:
2.0.0

2.0.1
Combat & Monster Presentation
2.0.2
World & Endgame Visual Evolution
2.0.3
Premium Polish & Animation
2.1.0
Art & Identity Expansion
2.1.1
Hero Art Expansion
2.1.2
Living World & Arena Atmosphere
2.1.3

Taken together, these updates represent one of the largest presentation overhauls the project has received.
What Comes Next?
For now, 2.2.0 is the stable release baseline.
The next update will not be required to finish unfinished 2.2.0 work. Any future 2.2.1 development will be a genuinely new step.
Possible future areas include deeper NPC reactions, stronger story-event presentation and additional world immersion — but those belong to the next development phase.
Thank you for playing Knights of Crystalis and following its continued development.
