Version 1.49.5 Released

Version 1.49.5 – Stability & Mobile Optimization focuses on making Knights of Crystalis more efficient, more resilient during long sessions, and more reliable on mobile devices.

This update does not introduce a new progression system.

Instead, it improves the systems already running underneath the game: saves, background simulation, mobile resume behavior, rendering, Arcade cleanup, audio routing and internal diagnostics.

Smarter Autosaving

The autosave system has been improved with a new Dirty-State model.

Previously, Knights of Crystalis could perform a complete save operation on a regular timer even if nothing meaningful had changed.

A full save involves considerably more than writing a single number. The game may need to:

  • normalize persistent state
  • synchronize progression systems
  • serialize the complete save
  • validate the result
  • calculate integrity data
  • update persistent browser storage

Version 1.49.5 avoids unnecessary full saves when the current state is unchanged.

Routine changes mark the save as dirty.

Autosave then writes only when there is something that actually needs to be persisted.

A conservative safety fallback still ensures that long sessions continue to receive periodic persistence.

Critical Saves Remain Immediate

Important transactions continue to bypass deferred saving.

This includes actions where durability matters more than write reduction, such as:

  • important reward claims
  • irreversible decisions
  • economy transactions
  • sensitive progression events

The goal is fewer redundant browser writes without weakening save safety.

Improved Background Simulation

Knights of Crystalis now contains a large collection of persistent systems that can continue to progress over time.

These include systems such as:

  • Village
  • Farm
  • Stronghold
  • Crownstead
  • Mine
  • Deepfolk
  • Aquarium
  • Social systems
  • Guild activities
  • Casino systems
  • Menagerie
  • Monster Arena
  • Apex progression

Version 1.49.5 introduces more intelligent update scheduling for these systems.

Instead of treating every background system as though it requires the same update frequency, different systems can now use their own appropriate cadence.

Active systems can remain responsive.

Inactive systems can be checked less frequently.

This reduces unnecessary work, especially during long mobile sessions.

Stronger Mobile Resume Handling

Mobile browsers frequently suspend pages when:

  • switching apps
  • locking the phone
  • changing browser tabs
  • leaving the device idle

When the player returns, multiple persistent systems may need to catch up.

Previously, portions of this resume process could execute as one continuous chain.

If one subsystem encountered an unexpected error, later systems could theoretically miss their resume pass.

Version 1.49.5 isolates persistent systems during resume.

Each subsystem now performs its catch-up independently.

A problem in one system should no longer prevent unrelated systems from resuming.

Resume diagnostics can also retain information about which systems completed successfully.

This makes sleep/wake behavior more resilient and easier to troubleshoot.

Faster Startup Behavior

The complete internal release self-test no longer needs to compete with the initial player-facing render.

The game now prioritizes:

showing the game first

and running the larger QA pass afterward during browser idle time when possible.

This uses an idle execution path with a fallback for environments where the preferred browser API is unavailable.

The result is a cleaner startup sequence without removing the game's internal release validation.

Magic Puzzle Ball Reset Fixed

A Complete Profile Reset issue affecting Magic Puzzle Ball has been corrected.

Magic Puzzle Ball maintained local browser progression in addition to its Knights of Crystalis Arcade integration.

The global profile reset did not previously clear every Magic Puzzle Ball storage key.

This could allow old local cabinet progression to survive a complete KoC profile reset and later re-enter the main save through Arcade synchronization.

Version 1.49.5 now clears:

  • the current Magic Puzzle Ball save
  • known legacy Magic Puzzle Ball saves
  • older related progression keys

The Arcade reset validation now covers all five Arcade cabinets.

Chapter XVI Audio Routing Improved

Beyond the Veil now has explicit audio routing across its major contexts.

Chapter XVI now correctly routes music for:

  • Story and Chronicle scenes
  • World exploration
  • standard combat
  • Elite encounters
  • Boss encounters

The final Chapter XVI progression also no longer falls back to an older Chapter XV ending cue.

The update reuses existing compositions that fit the intended atmosphere, so the total soundtrack library remains:

220 full tracks

plus

52 cues

for a total of:

272 musical pieces

Deepfolk Music Routing Fixed

An older internal routing mismatch affected Deepfolk music.

The audio system checked for a legacy view name that no longer matched the actual current Mine/Deepfolk interface.

The route has been corrected so Deepfolk music follows the screen the player is actually using.

Menagerie Music Routing Fixed

A similar legacy issue existed in Menagerie.

The audio system still expected an older generic Menagerie view identifier.

The modern Menagerie interface now uses several specific views, including areas such as:

  • Collection
  • Training
  • Team
  • Arena
  • Fusion
  • Apex

Music routing now recognizes the current interface structure.

Mobile Rendering Improvements

Large collections can be expensive for mobile browsers because the browser may attempt to fully calculate and paint content far outside the visible screen.

Version 1.49.5 introduces conservative use of modern browser rendering containment where supported.

Selected large repeated interfaces can now use deferred off-screen rendering behavior.

This benefits areas such as:

  • Bestiary entries
  • Menagerie cards
  • Crownstead equipment
  • Boss signature collections

The browser remains free to render visible content normally while postponing some work for content far outside the current viewport.

This is primarily aimed at reducing layout and paint work on mobile devices.

Cleaner Player-Facing Documentation

Several remaining legacy developer-oriented descriptions were also reviewed.

One example was an old Casino help message that referred directly to a historical internal baseline version.

That wording has been replaced with current player-facing documentation.

The goal is for in-game help to describe the game as it exists now rather than expose old implementation history.

Diagnostics and Regression Coverage

Version 1.49.5 expands the internal stability validation suite.

New checks cover areas such as:

  • Dirty-State save behavior
  • Arcade reset coverage
  • background scheduling
  • resume isolation
  • Chapter XVI audio routing
  • system balance integration

The Systems Balance self-test has also been expanded.

This gives future releases additional protection against regressions in the technical systems introduced during Versions 1.49.4 and 1.49.5.

Save Compatibility

Version 1.49.5 continues to use:

Save Schema 39

Existing compatible saves remain supported.

No reset is required for:

  • Campaign progress
  • Heroes
  • Merge
  • Specializations
  • Company Tactics
  • equipment
  • Abyss progression
  • Crownstead
  • Arcade statistics
  • collections
  • management systems
  • or other existing account progression

What Comes Next

Version 1.49.5 deliberately avoids combining these stability improvements with a complete rewrite of the game's loading architecture.

Knights of Crystalis has grown into a very large browser project, and deeper technical work remains possible.

A future technical foundation update can focus on areas such as:

  • splitting the main runtime into smaller modules
  • loading major system packs only when needed
  • reducing startup parsing work
  • further separating static and dynamic rendering
  • modernizing large UI event paths

Those changes have a much larger regression surface and are better handled as their own technical milestone.
